From Britpop Dreams to Fringe Stage: Andy Macleod Returns with New Spoken Word Show

Music promoter, author and performer Andy Macleod is returning to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe with a brand-new spoken word production that celebrates both the triumphs and heartbreaks of chasing a career in music. Soho Days, Camden Nights – A Failed Rockstar's Guide To Success receives its worldwide premiere at Just The Tonic – Mash House – Cask Room from 6–17 August, transforming his latest memoir into a lively theatrical experience directed by acclaimed actor Jason Watkins.
Set during the cultural explosion of 1996 London, the production follows Macleod as he attempts to reinvent himself after accepting that his own ambitions of becoming an indie rock star may have run their course. Instead, he throws his energy into discovering new talent in Camden's thriving live scene, convinced that managing the next breakthrough band could finally provide the success that had previously escaped him. The result is an honest portrait of youthful optimism meeting the realities of the music business.
The production is much more than a nostalgic trip through Britpop. It explores wider themes of identity, resilience and the often-overlooked value of changing direction when life refuses to follow the original plan. Macleod reflects on watching former bandmates and industry acquaintances achieve success while he continued balancing musical ambitions with everyday employment, creating a story that many creatives will instantly recognise.
Jason Watkins' direction brings additional prestige to the production. Best known for his BAFTA-winning performance in The Lost Honour of Christopher Jefferies, alongside memorable roles in The Crown, McDonald & Dodds and numerous film productions, Watkins helps elevate Macleod's autobiographical storytelling into an engaging stage experience filled with humour, warmth and emotional honesty.
