Your new single is called Pretty Enough — without giving too much away, what's one word you'd use to describe how it feels to listen to it?

Comforting.

You write all your own songs. Do you come up with the words first, or the melody — and has that ever surprised you?

Usually I come up with the melody and then the lyrics although when I have ideas for lyrics, I write them down and save them for the next time I'm at the piano.

Piano or guitar — if you could only play one for the rest of your life, which are you keeping?

Guitar - I play acoustic/electric but I'm also learning the bass so if I had to pick one I would pick the guitar because of the variety of sounds you can produce. Also, it's easier to take around with me!

You're 14 and already on your fifth single. What does the 10-year-old version of you think about that?

I think she's blown away, mainly by the courage to put myself out there! But, over recent years I've learned that it doesn't matter if some people don't like what you do. Every now and then someone tells me that their daughter wrote a song and performed it at school because she was inspired by me or that they know all the words to one of my songs and that makes me feel happy. I think this is what my 10-year-old self would be most proud of!

Pretty Enough is about social media and comparison. Do you have a rule for yourself when it comes to your own time on your phone?

I don't have a personal Instagram account and I am not on TikTok. I use messaging platforms to stay in touch with friends and my music account on Instagram for my songwriting, but I really try to limit my screen time. I've noticed that it doesn't make me feel good when I watch endless shorts or if I fall down a rabbit hole of looking at other people's photos. Everyone's life is much more complicated and nuanced than those short clips or little squares can ever portray.

What's the last song you heard that stopped you in your tracks — and why?

Jessica Baio - Inferior - the song itself is amazing and her vocals are insane, but what struck me most was the song’s message. Nobody is immune from insecurity but when it manifests as unkindness towards others (and yourself), it can be incredibly harmful. So, I think anything that can help people to see that measuring yourself against a fake ideal is a short-cut to unhappiness is a good thing!
