The Sound of Letting Go: Twin Phase Returns with ‘One Way Out’

Detroit songwriter Marcus Assenmacher makes vulnerability feel this good

Twin Phase is the project of Marcus Assenmacher, a Detroit-based songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist whose career reads like a masterclass in creative patience. Warped Tour stages at 17. A Heritage Guitars endorsement. NYU’s Steinhardt programme. Writing rooms with Teddy Geiger, Lauv, and Grammy-winning producer Ricky Reed. Years of building, contributing, and refining, all leading to this: music that is unambiguously, unapologetically his own.

‘One Way Out’ picks up where debut single ‘Wired The Same’ left off, delivering the same groove-driven production in a sharper, more urgent package. Marcus Assenmacher recorded the track at SayHeySounds, layering live instrumentation over a programmed foundation to create something that pulses with the energy of a live performance while carrying the clarity of careful studio craft. The synthesisers shimmer, the bass locks in, and the whole thing moves with the kind of effortless momentum that takes considerable effort to achieve.

“‘One Way Out’ is about reaching a point in a relationship where you realise the only path forward is to be honest with yourself and take a leap into the unknown. It explores the tension between holding on to what feels familiar and accepting that real growth often requires letting go.”  TWIN PHASE

Roosevelt and Chromeo are the obvious touchstones, but the emotional directness here belongs to Twin Phase alone. A debut album is on its way. On this evidence, it will be worth the wait.

We had the opportunity to explore Twin Phase’s top five tracks…

It’s hard to narrow it down, but five music videos that have stuck with me over the years are…"Thriller" by Michael Jackson, "Virtual Insanity" by Jamiroquai, "What's My Age Again?" by Blink-182, "Lisztomania" by Phoenix, and "Enjoy the Ride" by almost monday. Each one represents a different era of my musical journey and reflects the range of influences that helped shape Twin Phase—from classic pop and funk to pop-punk and modern indie pop. - TWIN PHASE
