Florence-based synthwave project Out Run unveils their highly anticipated 12-track debut album Past Lives alongside the energetic and reflective title single “Past Lives.” The album and single mark a major step in Out Run’s journey, fusing cinematic 80s-inspired synth textures with contemporary production and emotionally charged songwriting.
Founded in 2022 by singer-songwriter Ginevra Abbarchini and multi-instrumentalist Lawrence Fancelli, and joined by producer Niccolò Messeri on select tracks, Out Run pays homage to their namesake, the iconic 1986 arcade game Out Run, through retro-futuristic sound design, dreamy melodies, and immersive visual storytelling. Their previous singles, Monster and Hideaway, surpassed one million streams within a year, signalling the emergence of a fresh and authentic voice in the indie-electronic and synthwave scene.
Past Lives is a cinematic journey through memory, distance, and emotional survival. Each track explores the delicate space between holding on and letting go, where love becomes habit, silence grows loud, and dreams blur into fragments of past lives. The album features all previously released singles alongside new material, with a focus on themes of lost love, emotional abuse, and personal reflection drawn from Ginevra’s own experiences.
“This album is about the people we were once close to who have now become strangers,” says Abbarchini. “Memories of the past replay in our minds and continue to shape who we are.”
The record blends Out Run’s signature synth-heavy textures with cinematic atmospheres, drawing inspiration from Chromatics, Cocteau Twins, College, and Videoclub. Their sound, described as “80s 3.0,” reinvents nostalgia with a modern sensibility—timeless, emotional, and immersive.
The title track “Past Lives” is an energetic yet introspective electronic-pop song built around the iconic Roland Juno 60, weaving dark, dreamy tones with driving synth lines. Its pulsating textures and layered melodies evoke the bittersweet tension of remembering past relationships and navigating the emotional legacies left behind.
“It’s reflective but energising, a song about memory, loss, and how our past selves continue to influence us,” says Fancelli.
With soaring synths, hypnotic grooves, and cinematic flair, “Past Lives” showcases Out Run’s ability to craft electronic-pop music that is simultaneously nostalgic, contemporary, and deeply personal.
Out Run is cultivating a bold international presence in the indie-electronic landscape. Their combination of cinematic music, visual storytelling, and authentic connection with fans positions them as a defining voice in modern synthwave and electropop.
