Surface Detail push further into dissonance on new track ‘This Lantern’

Surface Detail have taken a more abrasive turn with their latest release, “This Lantern”.

The new track is driven by a 7/8 pulse, open-string guitar dissonance and deliberately awkward harmonic ideas, giving the Scottish group another opportunity to expand the progressive-metal approach developed across their recent material.

Guitarist Adam Anderson and drummer Andrew Carus began shaping the song after seeing Opeth live, but the finished version incorporates a wider range of influences and contrasts. Precise technical sections give way to heavier accents, while melody gradually becomes more unstable as the arrangement progresses.

High Voltage vocalist Robbie Horn also appears as a guest, bringing an additional vocal presence to the track.

“This Lantern” follows Surface Detail’s At Best, Outnumbered EP and previews a new album scheduled for autumn.
