Three-Time Grammy Nominee Bootie Brown Returns With New Single ‘2 Get 2 U’
Three-time Grammy-nominated artist and founding member of legendary hip-hop group The Pharcyde, Bootie Brown, returns with his latest solo single, ‘2 Get 2 U’, as he prepares to join Gorillaz for the US leg of their tour.
Blending laid-back production with Brown’s unmistakable delivery, the new release explores attraction, seduction and the often elaborate lengths people will go to capture someone’s attention. Playful and character-driven, ‘2 Get 2 U’ draws on the personality and storytelling that have defined Brown’s career while introducing a fresh collaboration with emerging producer Les Lockheart.
“What ‘2 Get 2 U’ means to me is the various ways men will try to seduce a woman,” Brown explains.
Born Romye Robinson, Brown first rose to prominence as a founding member of The Pharcyde, the influential alternative hip-hop group responsible for genre-defining tracks including ‘Passin’ Me By’ and ‘Drop’. Their distinctive combination of unconventional production, humour and inventive lyricism helped establish a new creative direction for hip-hop throughout the 1990s.
Brown has since maintained a presence across generations of alternative music, most notably through his longstanding association with Gorillaz. His contributions to tracks including ‘Dirty Harry’ and ‘New Gold’ have introduced his distinctive voice to audiences beyond traditional hip-hop circles.
His latest solo release also reflects a commitment to supporting the next generation of producers.
Through OrganicBeat Session, a show hosted on PharcydeTV, Brown regularly showcases emerging beatmakers and independent production talent. It was through this platform that he discovered Les Lockheart, whose instrumental would eventually become the foundation of ‘2 Get 2 U’.
“I host a show called OrganicBeat Session on PharcydeTV, and Les Lockheart is one of many talented beatmakers who are showcased on the stream,” Brown explains.
“I heard this track and knew I could create something special with it. I have been working on it for some time now, and it’s ready for me to share with the people.”
The collaboration brings together Lockheart’s contemporary production approach and Brown’s established storytelling style, creating a relaxed hip-hop track that balances flirtatious subject matter with the charismatic delivery that has become his trademark.
The single arrives during another busy period for the veteran artist, who is currently touring with Gorillaz ahead of their upcoming US dates.
Beyond his solo work and touring commitments, Brown continues to explore opportunities across music, fashion and media. Alongside PharcydeTV, he is a co-owner of Store No 242, while his collaborative catalogue includes contributions to Africa Express track ‘Otim Hop’ and Nubiyan Twist’s ‘Red Herring’.
