With his debut album, 'Ex Libris Wayne Banks', landing this November, we asked Banks to talk us through five picks that shaped his softer side.

If 'World We Share' introduced you to Wayne Banks the community-minded songwriter, 'Cold River', his second single, shows you a different side entirely: quieter, more personal, built around one relationship rather than a whole crowd. It's an acoustic rock ballad shaped by a collaboration with James Cole, and it points toward influences a little further from the terrace-anthem end of things, think Bon Iver, Jeff Buckley and Phoebe Bridgers alongside the Pearl Jam and Red Hot Chili Peppers grit underneath.

Madness One Step Beyond

1st album i bought myself when i was 10 years old using paper round money - learned every single word of it and used to sing it in the mirror playing a baby plastic saxophone

Stiff Little Fingers All The Best

My sister introduced me to stiff little singers and i loved them. I love the songs. I identified as a punk at the age of 13. They are what made me want to be in a band.

Metallica Ride the Lightning

14/15 years old - loved the energy of it all - for whom the bell tolls- bass player cliff burton was huge influence on me - bass part at start of song we played in my first band Hoof all the time

Red Hot Chilli Peppers Californication

Songs really good - great interaction between guitar and the bass - interplay. Saw them playing live with my wife - its one of the things we do together as a couple -always see rhcp

Crowded House Reoccurring Dream

The songwriting is beautiful - neil finn - love everything he does - one of faves. Seen Crowded House live with wife and sister in law and brother in law.
