There’s a lot of myth-making around so-called “breakout” records, but Omaha’s Bad Self Portraits have been quietly (and loudly) earning every moment since 2017. Their debut full-length, I Think I’m Going to Hell, is a powerful revelation of who they’ve always been: a band unafraid to write for the parts of you you’d rather not name.
Across the album, they wrestle with fear disguised as faith, the aching desire to love your parents without knowing how, and that cursed feeling you can’t quite shake — yet you still get up. On “Pensive,” vocalist Howell sounds like she’s unraveling in real time, laying bare wounds as an act of survival. It’s vulnerable but firm, chaotic yet controlled. Like the record itself, the songs build slowly, sit messy, and explode when you least expect it.
Rejecting stream-first culture, the band has teamed up with Midtopia’s Buy Before You Stream initiative to release the album on vinyl ahead of any digital drop. Fans can get a tangible piece of the band — something real to hold — while directly supporting the music they love.
Out August 26, I Think I’m Going to Hell is for anyone who still wants music that feels human, messy, and capable of knocking the wind out of you. Pre-order the vinyl now and prepare to feel every sharp edge and quiet confession.
