Del Roscoe’s “Black Hats” unfolds like a film scene; guitars ticking like hooves on dry dirt, lap steel gliding across a dusky horizon, and Robert Lee’s voice cutting through like a warning. It’s storytelling with stakes, evoking the slow approach of trouble without veering into sermon.
The single forms the stormy third act of a triptych, following “A Few More Miles” and “Train Train,” and showcases the band’s cinematic scope ahead of their debut album, out August 22 via Waydrift Records. Written during bassist Paul Abrelat’s health crisis, there’s urgency in every note; focused, defiant, and deeply felt.
Del Roscoe’s world-building extends beyond the audio, from hand-drawn visuals to stage props, but “Black Hats” stands tall as a key landmark. It’s ominous, atmospheric, and unshakeably real.
