We were delighted to dive into Deja Vu's influences and what's behind their sound in this interview, after the release of their new impressive single 'Going Home'. We've dropped a link at the bottom for you to check out!
Tell us about yourself as a band?
Déjà vu are a 4-piece band based in Wicklow. We have been playing across Ireland now for coming up to eight years. After years of playing covers, we decided to pursue the dream to write and release our own songs. We decided to follow the path of the original music because we love what we do. We became obsessed with the feeling of seeing a crowd enjoy themselves every second of a show and we thought what a better feeling than to make that happen with a piece of music we wrote rather than someone else’s songs.
What got you into music?
My father, growing up, always loved to play 80’s rock and old classics around the house and hearing that and seeing the joy it can bring millions of people just made me fall in love with not only just listening to music but making music. Having the ability to make someone feel something from an instrument in your hand or a lyric in your head is a feeling you can’t recreate anywhere else.
How would you describe your sound?
I would describe our sound as indie pop/rock. It has the elements of old rock songs with live drums and old tube amps, but it also has this modern twist to make it feel like an indie pop song with guitar swells, upbeat fun drums, solid bass lines and impactful lyrics to tie it all together
What is your favourite venue to play?
Throughout our years of playing, it is hard to pinpoint one specific venue we deem a favorite. Some honorable mentions would include O Keefes, The Tibetten Café in Morzine - France, Fitzpatricks, the Old Well live music venue,
Who would you most like to collaborate with?
A dream collaboration would be with the likes of Sam Fender, the 1975, The Killers and many more but as Irish born artists we would love to collaborate with other Irish artists such as The Coronas, Inhaler, Dylan flynn and the poets, Picture This and many more.
What is your creative process, and do you think it differs from others?
Our creative process is probably similar to other bands with multiple writers. It can usually start with an idea whether that’s lyrics first, a guitar riff or even just a concept. One band member would come to the others with their idea and that’s when the creative process begins. Once we have an idea in place we all sit down together and begin to organize a structure, finish the lyrics and then begin to record which is always done all in house in our own studio and once the recording process is complete, we send it off to be mixed and mastered.
What is special about this song to you?
Our new song Going Home is extremely important and special to us for multiple reasons but a key factor behind its importance is to do with its meaning. This song is about the feeling of anxiety which is certainly one we can all relate to so it meant when writing this song, we all had to open up and express feelings into Going Home which can be not only exciting but also nerve wracking.
