Interview: Waltzerr

Kenny Sandberg

Tell us about yourself as a band?

Kevin: Waltzerr is composed of Emily, Kevin, Anthony, Derek, and Schuyler. We came together in 2023 from various musical backgrounds and influences but try to make rock music we’d all listen to.

What got you into music?

Emily: My brother got me into a music. He played guitar for as long as I remember and even helped my dad pick out my first guitar. He tried giving me lessons but eventually gave up. But most of my early memories are with him listening to his music — he really exposed me to a lot of different genres as a kid.

How would you describe your sound?

Emily: It’s a little all over the place. We have a lot of indie pop elements as well as shoegaze. I listened to a lot of power pop growing up, so I feel as though that slips in here and there. I really have been getting into more grungier indie rock and am excited to see how that influences our music going forward.

What is your favourite venue to play?

Kevin: It’s hard to choose one since the Seattle scene has been good to us but some of our favorites are Chop Suey, Central Saloon, and Sunset Tavern

Who would you most like to collaborate with?

Emily: I’ve been really loving Blondshell. would love to collaborate. She seems cool and down to earth.

What is your creative process, and do you think it differs from others?

Kevin: Our songwriting usually starts with Emily or I bringing a partially-complete song (lyrics, vocal melodies, etc) to the band where we work together to build it up. The first thing we try to establish is usually the vibe of the song or how it should feel. And from there we work on structure. Everyone contributes their own parts individually and we try to make it work in context with the band. I don’t think it differs much from others honestly, the process has worked well for us thus far, writing new songs is something we really enjoy doing together. There’s something special about iterating on ideas until they feel like a Waltzerr song.

What is special about this album to you?

Kevin: This is our first EP and it feels like a huge milestone getting it out there. It’s a life milestone honestly.

I get imposter syndrome pretty regularly, so whenever we hit a new milestone like releasing an EP, that voice is silenced a little bit and I feel a little more validated in what I’m doing. So many bands never even have the opportunity to get to this point so I feel incredibly blessed and grateful to be able to record and play music with people that I love.
