A melody heard between sleep and waking became the starting point for Melinda Joy’s new single “Deadly.”

The singer-songwriter captured the idea on her phone as soon as it appeared, before completing the lyrics in a single sitting. That spontaneous beginning remains reflected in the track’s light, floating production.

Musically, “Deadly” brings together jazz-pop and indie-folk elements, using layered vocals, piano, keyboards, guitar, drums and electric bass to support lyrics about impermanence.

Its central message focuses on the possibility that endings are not simply points of loss, but moments that can create space for change and renewal.

Joy, who divides her time between Austin and Mexico, has built a multidisciplinary career spanning music, psychology, writing and film.

The single also arrives during work on her next album, which is being produced in collaboration with Antony Galatis after the pair met during Joy’s recent time in London.
