Penni Layne Rediscovers the Timeless Appeal of Jazz Through Love and Connection on 'everyday i fall in love'

Penni Layne finds a sweet spot between jazz tradition and contemporary soul on everyday i fall in love, an album built around intimacy, instinct and the chemistry of a close-knit ensemble. Working alongside her husband and longtime collaborator Larry Jackson, the Boston-based vocalist and songwriter brings original material and reimagined standards together in a collection that feels timeless without getting caught in the past.
Recorded live at New York’s Sear Sound, the album puts musical interplay front and centre. Pianist Michael Kanan, bassist Neal Miner and guitarist Greg Ruggiero help shape an understated, organic sound, giving Layne’s vocals space to move between jazz sophistication and the warmth of R&B. Four originals, written by Layne and Jackson, sit naturally alongside the standards, while Jackson’s vocal appearance on on top of the world adds a personal dimension to their shared musical language.
Love runs through the record in its many forms, from the thrill of new romance to the quiet complexities of lasting connection. Rather than dressing these themes in grand gestures, Layne favours subtlety, letting the songwriting and performances carry the emotion. everyday i fall in love is a quietly assured statement from an artist who understands that the most compelling music often comes down to connection, between musicians, between voices, and between a song and its listener.
