Liverpool-based risers STR^NGE return with their most emotionally raw and sonically ambitious release to date, the new single ‘Crying Shame’. Known for their off-kilter blend of glam-infused art rock and lyrical depth, the band now present a stripped-back, cinematic offering that dives headfirst into personal trauma and transformation.

Produced by Amelia Danby at Kempston Street Studios, with co-production from Chris Taylor (Miles Kane, The Coral, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds), ‘Crying Shame’ marks a stark departure from the band’s earlier, fuzz-heavy material. Trading distortion for drama, the track leans into the evocative songcraft of Tom Waits and Nick Cave, led by melancholic piano, sweeping strings, and a vocal performance that lays everything bare.

The lyrics take centre stage here, recounting lead singer and songwriter James’ harrowing experience with drug addiction during his time at university. Speaking about the single: "Crying Shame is about my time in university where I became addicted to drugs. I felt terribly down and filled my days with heroin, ketamine and benzodiazepines, and it's a wonder that I was able to write this song at all; and each line is rooted in reality.

I knew that the track had to have contrast, so punctuating those lyrics with a waltzing time signature felt like the most natural thing to do. I didn't want to lose the emotional effect of the song through the contrast however, so adding that sweeping string section really keeps the vibe of the tune grounded and doesn't let it give way to the ridiculous.”

Formed by Chrissy (formerly of The Mysterines) alongside James, David and Leon, STR^NGE draw influence from the likes of David Bowie and Talking Heads, building a sound that feels both nostalgic and freshly unpredictable. With a growing reputation for magnetic live performances, the band have sold out headline shows across Liverpool, recently headlined the 'Joy' stage at Future Now Festival, and opened for acts such as Demob Happy at the Arts Club.

Having already gained attention from major outlets, ‘Crying Shame’ showcases a band unafraid to challenge themselves, both musically and emotionally—a dark, beautiful step forward in the STR^NGE journey.
